New year, new job! Recent surveys show 1 in 4 Americans are looking to change careers in 2023. With the global pandemic in 2020 acting as a catalyst for remote hiring and working, it is likely that the shiny new job you are applying for will have a virtual interview paired with it. Nervous? Don’t be! These three tips to help you crush your virtual interview will be sure to communicate all the best messages to your future employer!
Choosing the space
Where you are located during your virtual job interview is crucial! First, run an internet speed test to make sure your upload (most important for video interviews) speeds are at an optimal level. Second, make sure your background is not rife with clutter. A plain wall with a few photos is great, as long as it does not distract your interviewer. Third, get in touch with your inner film director! Double-check that you are lit well, your microphone works, and your webcam isn’t spotty. Be Prepared
Virtually every interviewer will ask about previous work and meaningful impacts you had on performance, culture, etc… Jot down some career highlights on a few note cards and keep them handy as you go about your interview. It’s also good to rehearse a few major talking points ahead of time. Ask a friend or family member to conduct a mock interview so you can really knock those softball questions out of the park. And finally, stay calm. Take a few deep breaths. If a question throws you for a loop, it’s okay to ask the interviewer if you can have a moment to collect your answer. This shows you are calm under pressure and can think critically, which are highly valued skills.
Engage the Interviewer
The interviewer is not looking for monologue-type answers to all of their questions. It is vital that YOU show a genuine interest in the interviewer and the company by asking good questions. Before your interview, do some research on the company and who’s interviewing you. LinkedIn is a great place to learn helpful info. Find some common interests and ask meaningful questions, no matter how small the connection might be.
