Make The Right First Impression
In the words of Chuck Swindoll, “First impressions never have a second chance”. A job description may be the first interaction a person has with your company. In order to make the most of employment opportunities, your job descriptions must communicate what’s most important to the applicant, as well as what’s most important to you.
Determine Your Organizational Values
What do you look for in a dream candidate? In order to create a job description that invites high-level applicants, it’s important to consider who you want to apply. Using words and phrases like “enthusiastic team-player” or “highly skilled strategist”, depending on the position, can give applicants a good feel for what’s important to you. Furthermore, be intentional in your use of inclusive language. Run the job description by people of different personalities, ethnicities, and backgrounds to reveal any possible blindspots in the verbiage.
Employee Feedback
Getting feedback from current employees is a great way to gain insight on their experience as well as their personal interaction with the company. The company culture looks different to different people whether you’ve been there ten years or ten days, so get your team members involved in the writing process. Having positive feedback from employees can be a highly effective draw to new applicants.
Include Realistic Qualifications
It’s important not to “buff up” employment opportunities with unrealistic qualifications. By including too many mandatory qualifications, you could end up excluding solid candidates unintentionally. By including what soft and hard skills are necessary for excellence in the position, it gives the candidates a more accurate picture of what a day in the life of the job looks like. For example, a Human Resources job requires excellent interpersonal communication skills. An applicant who has a high EQ would likely do well.
